Kids Media Diet Workshops Bring Practical Help for Balancing Media.

Here’s How it Works!

Examine Startling Research

Studies by the National Institute of Justice, TV-Free America, Kaiser Family Foundation, and others, point to television’s contribution to shorter attention spans, common childhood disorders, lack of creativity, low academic achievement and increased violent crime. The statistics, though shocking, are not well publicized.

In each workshop we will:

• Look at our own childhood TV habits and why the same rules don’t apply today
• Look at the patterns in our current households
• Look at crime statistics and their relationship to television
• Look at consumerism as a thief of childhood

Take Home Techniques that Work

Setting limits may be one of the most important tasks of parenting. We will explore proven methods for setting time and content guidelines with our children. We will examine the positive aspects of television such as sharing sporting and cultural events as a family. We will look at various organizations set up to support parents in this area.

We CAN Make Positive Changes

It is easy to become overwhelmed with the responsibilities of parenting in today’s fast-paced, media driven world. Values and conditions that were a given a decade or more ago are being assaulted and with them our children’s youth.

This workshop teaches practical tools that may be implemented daily at home, in daycares, classrooms and other settings to achieve a more tranquil, nurturing and healthy environment for our children.

Simple, Workable Solutions

FORMAT: A typical workshop is two-hours broken into the following three parts:

Part I: Evolution – how did we go from
playing to watching?

Part II: The rewarding work of changing our
approach to media

Part III: Concrete and simple ways to set limits
that real kids have survived

Two breakout sessions include worksheets, idea sharing, and access to resources that support parents, educators and healthcare professionals.

This workshop will invite lively values discussions, support from other parents, learning age-appropriate methods and how implementing them will make our children stronger, more self-confident individuals and more responsible citizens. Is there anyone in your organization researching a related topic? They may want to add a segment to the session, increasing the benefit to your particular organization.
